What is a Differential?

Have you checked your car’s differentials lately? Do you know when to check the oil? Differentials are located with the axle assembly in your vehicle, helping to turn the wheels. If you have a front-wheel drive, then you’ll find the differential with the front axle, and it’s the opposite with the rear axle. However, all-wheel drive will have two differentials, one for the front and one for the rear.

Differentials are important for your car to run smoothly. It allows the car’s wheels to turn on a consistent axle even as it rotates at different speeds. In addition, as you take a turn around an intersection, pay attention to the wheel on the outside. It has to travel faster than the wheel on the inside turn. Your differential makes it so that all of this happens in stable conditions, and you won’t take turns at wild speeds because the axle can’t rotate consistently.
