How to Test Your Car's Battery Like a Pro

If you think the battery in your car is not performing optimally, you can always test it yourself. Here are the steps needed to safely test your car battery on your own.

  • Before you can safely test the car battery, you will need to turn off the car engine and the headlights as well.
  • If you notice any corrosion forming on either battery terminal, clear it free with a wire brush.
  • The voltmeter that you will be using has a red and black cable. The red cable is the positive end, and needs to connect to the positive terminal on the car battery.
  • Next, you will take the negative black cable, and attach to the negative side of the battery.
  • The voltmeter will show a reading of 12.4 or more if the car battery is in fine working order and less than 12.2 if it is failing.
